Meet Board Member Dr. Charlene Lamar!
Dr. Charlene Lamar has been a resident in Statesboro since 1984, when she moved from Hazlehurst, GA to attend Georgia Southern College. Her dedication and passion to help students realize the opportunities that exist through education and supportive programs available to them is reflected in her own education that includes a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in Finance from what was then Georgia Southern College. She also earned teacher certification for middle grades, a master's degree in Student Services, a specialist degree in Educational Leadership and a doctorate in Education Administration all from Georgia Southern University.
She also graduated from the Leadership Bulloch and Leadership Southeast Georgia programs, Statesboro Citizens Police Academy, the Georgia Economic Development Academy, and the Technical College System of Georgia Executive Leadership Academy.
With a career spanning over 30 years in education, she has served in capacities that provide instruction based on state and county expectations and that bridge educational policy and student support services. All but two years were serving Bulloch County in positions such as a middle school Language Arts teacher and instructional coach, a high school Reading and English teacher, an adjunct instructor of Developmental Studies, a Chief GED Examiner, a JTPA Intake Specialist, a Dean of Adult Education, a Director and Vice President for Student Affairs, and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Ogeechee Technical College.
No stranger to community service, Dr. Lamar participated in Dancing with the Statesboro Stars - a benefit for Safe Haven, a shelter for victims and children of domestic violence - and has worked with the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, American Diabetes Association, Habitat for Humanity and the Boys & Girls Club. She is extremely excited about being another spokesperson for the Camilla Foundation. She believes schools provide an environment where students are likely to have a spirit of inquiry, creativity and a love of learning as long as students have the ability to create and sustain meaningful relationships with their peers and adults.
Now that she has retired, Dr. Lamar enjoys travel, snow skiing, hiking, and GSU Eagles football. Her interest in football is particularly keen because her son, Hunter, #64 (2011-14) and her husband, John, #64 (1981-1982) played for the Eagles.
